1. 题目:An overseas company and a man

2. 内容:

China Overseas Holdings Limited is a famous Chinese overseas company. It is said that some of the investors has political background, because according to their working experiences, they have worked in government before entering the company. The vice-president, Mr. Hao, whose birthplace is in Shenyang, China, has got a degree of MBA (Master of Business Administration) of Stanford University.

When Mr. Hao was a little child, he has already showed his design talents. He liked to draw pictures and decorate his own clothes. However, after he entered University, he chose architecture as his major. He believed that building and construction are also way to design, but this is designing a city or a country as quoted his own speech.

Teaching and learning methods


Communicative teaching method; task-based teaching method; cooperation study method; independent study method.



Teaching procedures


Step 1: Lead in

The teacher will play a video. Students note down key information as much as they can. Then the teacher checks what information the students have got and make a mind map according to information they provide.

Step 2: Pre-reading

Introducing background information. Stanford University, MBA and new words: overseas, background and birthplace.

Step 3: While-reading

1) Fast reading. Students read the passage for the first time quickly, and summarize the main idea.

2) Careful reading. Students read the material again, and answer the following questions: Where is Mr. Hao’s birthplace? What talent has Mr. Hao already showed when he was a child?

Step 4: Post-reading

1) Explanation of some language points. The teacher concludes some good phrases in the text.

2) Retelling of the passage. Every student in a group writes down three points of this passage. Then they combine their points and retell the passage. 

3) Group work. Students discuss what major they want to choose in the future with their group members for five minutes.

4) Speech and role-play. Students make a speech in front of the class, and then there will be some “reporters” who ask them several questions according to their speech.

Step 5: Summary and homework

Students look at the blackboard and the teacher invites some of them to summarize what they have learned in this class.

Homework: write a passage about your dream major, and how you will achieve your goal. (No less than 120 words)
